While beach reads are light, they should be taken seriously. After all, we only get so many days in the sand during our wild and precious summers! That’s why I decided to consult with two pros to bring you this year’s best beach read recommendations—the only ones you’ll need for a perfectly escapist season.
Meet the Expert Beach Reads Panel: We’ve Read 1,000+ Combined!
Jules: host of Friday Night Readers, a virtual book club inspired by Gilmore Girls. Book blogger since 2019. Reads like Rory.
Kirsten: co-host of Beyond the Bookends blog and the Read Carpet Report podcast, both of which focus on new releases and celebrity book clubs, since 2017. Reads like a mix of Rory and Lorelai.
Jackie: Kirsten’s co-host and Kirsten’s best friend. Reads like a mix of Lane, Rory, and Lorelai.
Each year, Jackie and Kirsten host a Beach Reads Bonanza (with lots of online and in-person author events you can join). I scoured their massive list of recommendations and narrowed it down to the ones I’ve also read and approve of for the Gilmore Girls-inspired readers around here.
Between the three of us full-time book bloggers, we’ve considered 1,000+ beach reads we’ve collectively read over the years to curate this list for summer 2026.

The Gilmore Girls are certainly known for summer reading. But they aren’t exactly known for escapist reading. After all, Rory brought Joan Didion’s grief memoir, The Year of Magical Thinking, to Martha’s Vineyard, where Lorelai waxed poetic about Moby Dick. And spring break? Rory thought it was a great time to catch up on politics.
But that’s also a great reason to pick modern beach reads that work in 2026 for readers like them. We can hypothetically challenge them, and ourselves, to find something that matches our unique tastes while also providing a mental breather.
American Fantasy by Emma Straub
Recommended for readers like Lane Kim— a millennial music lover
Instant bestseller American Fantasy takes the reader on a nostalgic cruise with a 90s boy band. Say less! On board, Annie begins to reevaluate her aging life. Turns out, the passions of our youth can resurface in meaningful ways.

Go Gentle by Marie Semple
Recommended for readers like Richard Gilmore— thoughtful and philosophical
In the bestselling Oprah’s Book Club pick Go Gentle, Adora is a Stoic philosopher who wants nothing more than what she already has, particularly after arranging a coven in New York. But a chance romantic encounter throws her off balance. A dark moment from her past resurfaces, showing the reader how she got here and challenging her reasoning.

Strangers by Belle Burden
Recommended for readers like Emily Gilmore— a book club babe
This blinded-by-divorce memoir of a famous socialite’s granddaughter is the #1 bestselling, hottest nonfiction book of the year. Strangers caught on because you can’t help but think, “What if that happened to me?” And it allows you to be a fly on the wall of the top 1% living on Martha’s Vineyard.

Summer State of Mind by Kristy Woodson Harvey
Recommended for readers like Lorelai Gilmore and Sookie St. James— small town moms who like their hearts warmed
The title says it all: Summer State of Mind gives you just that. After a career setback, nurse Daisy escapes to a coastal town for a fresh start, where she teams up with local baseball coach Mason after they discover an abandoned baby. As they grow closer and Daisy bonds with the child, they confront their personal struggles and secrets within the community. It blissfully blends romance, family drama, and found family.

Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke
Recommended for readers like Rory Gilmore— a feminist on the pulse
The #1 bestselling GMA book club pick, Yesteryear, is the hottest fiction title of the year. It takes a modern trad wife with millions of followers and awakens her in the 1800s time period she so desires. This is one nonstop, wild, and crazy ride that readers seem to either love or hate (especially that plot twist at the end). It’s worth picking up either way—to be part of the conversation.
The audio moved too fast for me, personally, so I relied on Jackie’s Yesteryear summary to slow me down on the details. For this reason, I recommend picking up a print or digital copy.
