The Backstory
I’ve run a Rory Gilmore Reading Challenge to read the books on Gilmore Girls since 2021, when I quickly learned that “other” lists of books on the show were both wrong and incomplete. So, I set out on the daunting task of personally verifying as many as I could by their exact reference, no matter how big or small.
At this point on the internet, if someone can’t pinpoint where a book is referenced, I wouldn’t believe it’s really on the show. I’ve seen so many falsities, including LLMs who literally make up books and references.
I also quickly learned how hard the task actually was. Some books are blurry; others are only subtly referenced in fast talk, like “Ponyboy” (The Outsiders). So, the process took several years and numerous rewatches, walking around with my little pink notebook and making lots of Google searches. I once spent a solid thirty minutes searching “Victorian book cover with woman wearing pearls” just to make my list the biggest and the best.
When I was finally done earlier this year, I released a 100+ page PDF (one page per episode) to paid subscribers, thinking my work was complete. It wasn’t. When I tried to have Staples print it for me, it cost $100+! Printing it myself would have used a lot of expensive ink and required a binder, too.
So, I went back to the drawing board, knowing there had to be a better way to get this information in mine and other readers’ hands for rewatches.
I settled on the platform Lulu, which is a global publishing tool and is not Amazon! (Yay for small businesses.) It prints a color, paperback-bound copy on demand at a fair price and mails the book directly to you, so I don’t have to keep inventory.
Then, I spent a few more months refining the book: editing, revising, adding extras like quotes and a reading journal you can fill in, and testing samples.
It just makes more sense and is more cost-effective for everyone this way. It also helps me simplify my marketing message:
Free subscribers get a 9-page checklist of the books on Gilmore Girls
Paid subscribers get a 15-page checklist of books on Gilmore Girls with episodes
Anyone can also purchase the 200-page bound book for a full breakdown of each episode and a fillable journal, without DIYing it at a similar expense to a binder and printing. Use code READMORE15 (all caps) for 15% off through 10/9/26.
